• On the outskirts of rural Vodecée, Philippeville, lies an atypical plot; amidst barren farmlands, a green oasis suddenly appears, with dense vegetation and two ponds, both fed by a nearby natural spring.

The project is part of a broader concept and network of eco-retreats as a way to escape the stress and hustle of city life and reunite the inner soul with nature. Opening up the site to external visitors shares on one hand its philosophy to others and on the other hand allows for further investment in it’s ecological development. The ponds will be given natural soft banks, spruces will be replaced by native deciduous trees, and the herb and shrub layer will be upgraded. The plot will not only serve as a retreat for people but also as a stepping stone for fauna and flora.

Fallow and Plant en Houtgoed shaped the idea for the site, where architecture and nature alternate and complement each other. Small object-like installations (outdoor shower, outdoor kitchen, floating platform, etc.) in the landscape make the site accessible and experiential. The largest intervention was the development of a small indoor accommodation to enjoy the place even during intermediate seasons. The structure is built on a rational wooden grid and hovers above the ground to minimize ecological impact on the soil. The charred black finish forms a durable layer that protects the wood and harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding greenery. A steel roof made of corrugated sheeting, floating above the main volume, playfully provides coverage where needed.
